The Barack Obama dance

Those of us with black or brown children in our families are no doubt taking the campaign of Barack Obama more personally than people who are not raising black or brown children.

This afternoon my brother Pafio, a Ghanian man living on the outskirts of Fort Bragg, put on the single "Barack Obama" by Blakk Rasta, a reggae artist from Tamale, in northern Ghana, and reggae DJ on Hitz 103.7 FM in Ghana's lively capital city of Accra.

His daughter DeDe, age five, sprung up and began improvising an impressive, intensely personal dance that would be difficult to describe. Imagine the shoulders and knees of a five-year-old laughing to themselves.

When she was finished dancing, she announced, "That's Barack Obama, my new president."
